Il merkezine 45 km. uzaklıkta bulunan göl, deniz seviyesinden 1956 m. yükseklikte ve 25 km2’lik bir alanı kaplamaktadır.



Çıldır Gölü kışları çok soğuk geçtiği için kasım ayı sonlarında donmakta ve buz derinliği 1 m’yi aşmaktadır. Gölün buzları nisan ayı başlarına kadar çözülmemektedir. Kışları yüzeyinde 2 m. civarında buz oluşan Çıldır Gölü’nde, buz delinerek balık avı yapılmaktadır.



Çıldır Gölü dışında, Aktaş ve Aygır gölleri ile Posof Çayı’nda da sportif olta balıkçılığı yapılabilmektedir.
