Sultan Ikinci Murad büyük bir hızla Edirne'ye geldi. Osmanlı Ordusunun başına geçti. Varna önlerine gelen Osmanlı Ordusu, Haçlılara karşı saldırıya geçti. Haçlı Ordusunun Varna önlerinde bozguna uğratılmasıyla büyük bir zafer kazanıldı (10 Kasım 1444).

Varna Savaşı, Haçlıların Istanbul'un Türkler tarafından fethedilmesini engellemek için yaptıkları son girişim oldu.

Bu savaş, Osmanlıları Segedin Antlaşmasına zorlayan şartları tamamen değiştirdi. Sultan Ikinci Murad, bir müddet sonra tahtı, yine oğluna bırakarak çekildiyse de devlet adamlarının ısrarları sonucu tekrar tahtına döndü.
